Love it. I saw this "letter" elsewhere and spit out my coffee...all that's missing is the Ralph Wiggum "I choo-choo-choose you" response from UEFA

@Ryan,
But there are teams capable of beating Seattle in Seattle. Regardless of where they play, Seattle should have been tired with league, cup, and champions league. Seattle isn't invincible. The union came to Seattle and beat us bad. I don't remember ever beatin LA except for Cup play. I want to add to the list of folks who should be pissed off...the players. Valle it in the front office, blame it in owner diversification, it's up to the players (reserves or the 1st squad) to pick up the sword. As a Seattle fan I want to tell the other MLS players, get mad damn it! We got your cup. Take it from us. Or, just make it meaningless and we'll Take the damn thing every year I don't mind. And neither will the 35k plus at the stadium and all the other ssfc fans. The only other clubs/fans that have the heart to take it is prob Portland and Vancouver. Why? Becuz they want to beat our ass.

Yeah, I meant to follow-up to see if there was any event or series of events that could explain the statistical bump before we seem to settle back into our "typical" pattern. And exactly, perhaps our perception is not matching the reality? It just "feels" like we should be better because we see our collection of players and when we see the statistical results, it feels a bit underwhelming.

Is this what it feels like to support the Three Lions?

/Sorry, couldn't resist

It looks like 2007 was our best year (+.6 differential) and then we just leveled off. You'd think with all the new money they're finding they could find a way to get more goals scored.

I like this, thanks for taking the time to run the numbers through.

I think transparency (even if orchestrated) is a good first step. "Fixing" the refs won't happen overnight, but looking into the process at least helps me understand WHAT needs to be fixed.

Mmmm, actually in most industries or professions when you provide incentives (either financial or otherwise) with training & development, professional review and recruiting you tend to see the overall level of quality improve. It rarely happens overnight, but it does happen. Perhaps part of the issue is the quality baseline is so low that from a fan's perspective "improvement" might mean "not too crap" rather than "flat out crap". But the main gist of Ginge's response seems to be that first we need to recognize there is an issue with the level of officiating (there is), and then try to address it (we're told its being done but then again, haven't we heard that before?). Refs do have one of the worst, most unappreciated jobs around but there are ways to improve the situation.

Also, while I understand USSF as being a "service provider" in supplying officials for the US leagues, what incentive do they have to improve officiating?

I get Bocanegra and Onyewu starting for qualifications, but as a gap or transitional player between Gonzalez getting his eventual cap - its a fait accompli at this point, to me...just a matter of when - call up Geoff Cameron. He's older and more experienced but can still defend at the back and initiate attacks from there. Bring him as a sub for Onyewu and have Gonzalez on the roster as well. I know we impatient (and occasionally uneducated *ahem*) fans aren't Jurgi and don't know his long-term strategy, but it has to be clear that Ream just isn't the guy for the job.

"that doesn’t excuse a consistently horrible performance."

In your opinion. We referee to the LoTG and directives we are given. We get one view, at full speed in the middle of the action. No stop & slow motion replays from multiple angles.

"As for fixing the problem, MLS should employ their own referees, making it financially worthwhile for these guys to focus on the job and do the extensive training required to be a good referee."

What training exactly? And where do these referees come from?

"They should do extensive review and analysis of referee performances"

This already happens.

"hold them accountable for mistakes poor decision making"

This too.

"force them to answer the medias questions about controversial decisions."

How will this help? Refer back to point re: one view of the action, etc....

"Treat the referees better financially"

Money won't help. The best referees in the country are already working the top games. There are a bunch of guys waiting in the wings hoping for better pay.

"provide them better feedback"

We are already getting the best feedback available.

"combine that with accountability like any other job and you’d likely see a marked improvement."

Not likely. No other job in the world is scrutinized as much as a soccer referee.
