LFCNY Responds to Steven Cohen’s "Apology"
I received this statement just a few minutes ago from Conor Brennan, VP of LFCNY:
LFCNY PRESS RELEASE.
***************
The Steve Cohen boycott continues; Celtic Supporters’ Clubs (North America) join; LFCNY asks ‘what apology’?
***************
Steve Cohen has printed a statement on his website today, May 18th 2009, which he says is an apology. The LFCNY completely reject his interpretation of that word and the attempts at the same within.
It should be noted that there are some words missing. In no particular order, those words are, ’96′, ‘dead’, ‘Hillsborough’ and ‘Liverpool’. There are others, but it’s not for us to either write Steve Cohen’s apology nor help him understand what a real apology looks like. In a recent interview, the LFCNY has described Cohen’s previous ‘apologies’ – yes, this is far from him first foray in this territory – as “snivelling, mealy-mouthed, forced and qualified.” We apologize that we forgot ‘disingenuous’, also.
In no shape manner or form does the statement Steve Cohen released today constitute an apology. It is nothing more than an attempt to save the crumbling career of someone who has consistently lied about the events at Hillsborough, Liverpool fans and 96 dead Liverpool fans.
At no time and in no manner has Steve Cohen attempted to engage any Liverpool fans or fans group seriously. He has however, bragged about calling Liverpool fans in the pub, ‘murderers’. That is the level of his debate and the contempt in which he holds Liverpool fans.
The LFCNY want Steve Cohen gone off the air. Gone from Fox, gone from Sirius/XM. He is a merchant of hate who knowingly peddles lies and gets various sponsors to pay for the peddling of these lies. The football (soccer) community in the USA is small enough without having it completely divided by someone who views the deaths of 96 fans as a way in which to smear other football fans.
At the end of the day, there are 96 fans of Liverpool dead. When Steve Cohen besmirches their memory, he insults all Liverpool fans and all football fans. That is why the Celtic Fans Clubs of North America have joined in this boycott of Steve Cohen and his sponsors today.
The LFCNY continues to call on all companies to re-evaluate their sponsorship of Fox Football Fone In and World Soccer Daily.
There are no winners here. The 96 remain dead, but their memory will not be sullied by a non-apology apology from someone who peddles such obvious lies and hate about them as Steve Cohen.

LFCNY and Mr. Brennan, superb work. Steve Cohen is a cancer on the face of soccer journalism in the USA. Please keep Cohen’s feet to the fire.
As a former New Yorker now based in Ohio, I must say how proud I am of my fellow New Yorkers for leading the charge on this. Also sorry I never joined when I was there.
Steve Cohen deserves everything he gets and I’m guessing he’s really f**cked off since Brennan and the LFCNY started hounding his ass.
Get Steve Cohen off the air. Support the LFCNY boycott.

People demanded an apology and got an apology. Now they’re trying to dictate the terms of the apology?
I don’t think Cohen’s words were particularly sincere and heartfelt, but he apologized and is trying to put this to rest.
You keep pressing this and you are going to subvert your very aims: You’re going to turn Cohen into the sympathetic figure and people are going to turn you off.
Maybe rethink the scorched earth strategy here. This from someone who was appalled by what Cohen said.
But if his apology wasn’t one, aren’t the LFCNY and all Liverpool fans entitled to feel cheated and call for a real one? The LFCNY are right, he never apologized to the 96 or any Liverpool fans.
Here he is calling Liverpool fans murderers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4voocATI3g.
They’re right not to trust him. He’s done this before.

You are free to call for whatever you like. But now that he has issued a statement with an apology in it, you start to quickly slip from the moral high ground if you challenge the validity of his words.
It might not be exactly what you want, but he has lost face and has been discredited. Again, if you keep pressing this you run the risk of looking petty and vindictive.
There are so many more constructive ways to use the energy that would be spent on this. Just my $.02.
2 things:
1. I’m not involved with the LFCNY, just an interested spectator.
2. We’ll just have to agree to differ. Calling something an apology an apology when it suits your needs, when it patently not, is such a crappy way to go.
You are all a bunch of petulant little children. Grow up.
Good work LFCNY – keept it up. Cohen is slowly drowning in his own hate – not ling to go.
JFT96!
wonderful-”People demanded an apology and got an apology. Now they’re trying to dictate the terms of the apology?”
That would be the “heartfelt, sincere, genuine” apology that only took five weeks in the making?
The one proceeded by the words “lets put this crap to bed” and ended with him screwing up the paper it was written on and tossing it who knows where. You don’t believe me take a listen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd28-tQgZTc
Ten minutes later (included on the above link) in my opinion he’s verbally beating on the North American branches of the LFC fan club ‘spokesperson’ by name.
Did he even mention the word “sorry”?
Apology my ass.
Oh and here is Stevie boy in his own words…. http://www.youtube.com/user/96friend
Liverpool FC have released a statement
REDS CONDEMN HILLSBOROUGH RADIO LIES
Liverpool Football Club 21 May 2009
Liverpool Football Club have today issued a statement in response to the recent ill-informed and inflammatory comments made about the Hillsborough disaster by the London-born, US-based Radio presenter Steve Cohen.
The official statement reads: “Liverpool Football Club totally condemns the comments regarding the Hillsborough disaster made by the radio and TV broadcaster Steve Cohen.
“Mr Cohen has obviously never taken the time to read the Taylor Report which stated clearly that ticketless fans were not a contributory factor or responsible for the events of that day.
“To use the 20th anniversary of the disaster to repeat false claims about Liverpool fans (which Mr Cohen first broadcast and then apologised for in 2006) is even more unacceptable.”

WSD in not soccer journalism, but its damn good fun. He apoligized, if you don't accept it, stop listening. This is a man who represented our country in the military and deserves respect even if he says something your disagree with.
